Installation practices for european wood windows
I am interested in getting feedback on proper techniques for installing european wood windows without nailing fins in domestic wood framing. I have seen the windows boxed with plywood and screws going into the frame from the outside. These frames are then screwed into the framing. I am curious as to weatherproofing. The house has been sheated and will have stucco.
Any ideas would be helpful.

I live in Italy and all my doors, windows and shutters are made of wood. Although the concept of storm doors does not exist here, I may have found a carpenter willing to make one for me using chestnut, our hardwood of choice. There is one hardware item I cannot find locally -- the flush stops that hold the screen/glass panels in place. Would you be able to tell me what we call them in the States (latches? togglebuttons?) and who manufactures or sells them? All the other hardware will be dark bronze.

Before American windows came with fins, they were screwed to the rough framing through shims which level and plumb the windows. The window frames should be the actual depth of the wall from inner finish to face of sheathing, or else extension jambs need to be either purchased or fabricated. The inner and outer casings then fasten over the gypsum board inside, and to the sheathing outside. The outside casing should either be quite thick, or be shimmed out to extend somewhat beyond the stucco surface.
